“Journal of Joseph Warren Parmelee – A Newport merchant, 1842-1843. These excerpts are about events in Newport in late 1842 and 1843. Most of the entries by Parmelee pertain to 1843 when Newport was a village of 2000 inhabitants and John Tyler was president of the United States.
The journal is the property of John C. McCrillis and Sally (McCrillis) Eldredge, both of Newport, NH. The excerpts were compiled by Andrew L. Andrews, also of Newport and a member of the Newport Historical Society. He was assisted by Ray Reid, another Newport historian. Parmelee wrote with a quill pen.
The Newport Historical Society thanks Mr. McCrillis and Mrs. Eldredge for their generosity in loaning the Society the journal.
It is one of the few writings that give flesh the skeletons of Newport’s ancestors. Granted the feelings and observations are subjective and change change from page to page, depending on the writer’s mood and how well life was treating him that day. Even so, this individual has painted a picture of Newport that few have seen in print and thus becomes a slice of early Newport history.”
