“Newport, officially termed “The Sunshine Town” in 1926 when the Board of Trade issued its first 10,000 leaflets, was given this nickname by Billy B. Van. Newport took to heart its honorary mayor’s comment that “…the sun always shines on Newport’s Main Street.” In that same vein we hope the information in this book will reignite a spirt of communal pride and provide a common understanding of where we have been, from which a strong community identity can grow.

Mansions and Prominent Landmarks of Newport, New Hampshire grew from the desire of the Newport Historical Society to mark the forthcoming 250th anniversary of the town’s original charter, granted by King George III on October 6, 1761. As the year 2011 approaches, we look forward to celebrating our rich and varied cultural heritage. This and other forthcoming books will tell the story of Newport through the history of the people who helped to build this “model New England town.” Through the industrious nature, foresight, and leadership of our founding fathers Newport became a major developmental force in the state of New Hampshire and served an important role in the formative years of our country’s history.

This book includes descriptions and historical information about Newport’s prominent homes, important public buildings and monuments, and the townspeople who built them. It is illustrated with Real Photo postcards, original photographs, and document images. Every effort has been made to verify the accuracy of the historical facts herein presented.”
