A Tragic Chapter in Newport’s History: The Death of Austin Corbin

On August 9, 2025, the Newport Historical Society hosted tours of the Corbin Estate in Newport, New Hampshire. Whether you joined us or not, we invite you to learn more about Austin Corbin—a native of Newport, a powerful 19th-century financier, and the man behind this extraordinary estate.

Born in Newport in 1827, Austin Corbin became a powerful figure in American finance and transportation during the 19th century. From founding the Corbin Banking Company in New York to revitalizing Manhattan Beach as a premier seaside resort, Corbin was known for his bold entrepreneurial ventures. He also served as president of several railroads, including the Long Island Railroad, and created a 25,000-acre wildlife preserve on Croydon Mountain.

Tragically, on June 4, 1896, Austin Corbin died in a carriage accident on his estate. The horses, startled just after departure, bolted down the driveway. The carriage overturned, fatally injuring both Corbin and his coachman John Stokes, while Corbin’s grandson, Corbin Edgell, and his tutor, Dr. Paul Kunzer, sustained serious injuries. The dramatic details of the accident were reported in the New Hampshire Argus and Spectator and have since become part of Newport’s enduring history.

Following a private funeral service at the estate, Corbin’s remains were transported by private rail car to New York. His funeral was held at St. Bartholomew’s Church and attended by prominent figures of the day, including Cornelius Vanderbilt and other railroad executives. He was buried in the family vault at Woodlawn Cemetery.

To accompany this article, we’ve included ten historical photographs from the NHS archives. These images depict the Corbin estate, Corbin himself, his private Pullman railcar, his grandson, his gravestone, and memorabilia from his business ventures. We hope this collection serves as a lasting tribute to a man whose life and legacy left a profound mark on Newport and beyond.
