Have you ever wondered why a piece of firefighting equipment is displayed in the lobby of the Bar Harbor Bank on Main Street? The answer is a fascinating story—one that begins in 1832, when a group of Newport residents recognized the importance of having a well-equipped fire department. It continues with the town’s efforts to preserve a piece of history and lives on today in the dedication of the men and women of the Newport Fire Department. No matter the weather, the events in their own lives, or the dangers they personally face, these individuals rush to extinguish fires that threaten our homes and community. This is not just history—it’s a legacy that affects each and every one of us.
