“Although I always admired a covered bridge – as there were so few of them left – I never took much of an interest in them, their history, why they were covered or how they were constructed. I, like most, noticed them only for the brief moment it took to pass through one.

All of that began to change on the morning of May 25, 1993. A call came to the newspaper office where I worked in Claremont, NH, that arsonists had torched the Corbin Covered Bridge in nearby Newport. Driving over, I only thought about filing a story for that day’s paper. After that, I assumed there would be a follow up story or two and then news would move onto something else. But several Newport residents had different ideas. Before the smoke cleared from the smoldering remains, they began what would become an 18 month campaign to rebuild the Corbin Covered Bridge in a style closely replicating the old one.”
