As we celebrate the 110th Newport Winter Carnival, it’s fun to look back at the moments that shaped this long‑running tradition. This photograph from our archives captures a lively scene from the 50th Winter Carnival Coronation Ball in 1967, when Newport gathered in its winter finery to crown the year’s Carnival royalty.
The Coronation Ball has always been one of the festival’s most anticipated events — a night of music, dancing, and community spirit that bridges generations. Looking at this snapshot from 1967, you can almost hear the band playing and feel the energy of a town celebrating together.
This post is part of a five‑day series highlighting pieces of Winter Carnival history. Tomorrow, we’ll explore another artifact from the early years that helped shape the festival we know and love.
