Winter Carnival Event from 108 years ago

This photo is from the Jack and June Liberman Collection at the Newport Historical Society Museum. Hockey on the Common – UNH Vs. Dartmouth. No. 2016.0047.2006 Liberman
This is a postcard of a hockey game between the University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College teams. One of the players skating on the UNH team was Milo Brill, father of June Liberman.
Additional notes found in the photo album collection mention that the game was played in -20°F temperatures!
The following information was found supporting these images using the Argus Champion Digital Archives sponsored by the Richards Free Library, with a link found under our “RESEARCH” tab.
In the Friday, February 9, 1917 edition of the Argus and Spectator, Winter Carnival events are listed. Details confirmed not only the frigid temperatures but also the fact that a major fire on Main St. “proved an attraction” so great that the game was postponed until later in the day.
