Explore Newport’s Argus Champion Archives Online

The archives of the Argus Champion are a rich source of information about Newport’s people and past. The archives are available online through a link provided by the Richards Free Library which can be found on our Research page along with a guide on how to get the best search results. The guide was based on an instructional brochure compiled by Pam LaFountain on behalf of the Newport Historical Society.

The use of a key word or words, combined with dates, will yield matching results. The more specific the search, the more specific the results. In addition to the Argus Champion, other local historic newspapers are available at this same link.

Along with the Nettleton House Museum archives, the Argus is a treasure-trove of historic information.

Be forewarned: The website, or even looking at one issue of the newspaper, is a proverbial “rabbit-hole”! Enjoyable and searchable.

A brief history of the Argus Champion:

  • The newspaper was brought to Newport in 1825 from Claremont and was named the New Hampshire Spectator.
  • Another Claremont newspaper joined it in 1834. The new name became Argus and Spectator.
  • The Republican Champion was also  published in Newport from 1891 to 1925. When it joined the existing paper in 1925, the name became the Argus-Champion.

In addition to news coverage of Newport, many area towns are also included in Argus news stories, columns and other items.
