As we usher in a new year, the Newport Historical Society is excited to unveil our refreshed online presence. This new website is designed to better connect you with the history of Newport, offering a gateway to our exhibits, programs, and volunteer opportunities. Together, we can preserve and celebrate the stories that make our town unique.

Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Accomplishments

Your support, combined with the dedication of our all-volunteer team, has made this past year extraordinary. Here’s a glimpse of what we achieved together:

  • Technology Upgrades: Added internet access to the museum, updated our security system, launched a new website, and introduced multimedia displays to enhance your museum visits.
  • Educational Programs: Brought Newport’s rich history to life through talks and events at Richards Free Library, Summercrest Senior Living, and our popular Magical History Tour.
  • Exhibits and Newsletters: Curated comprehensive exhibits, including the story of Francis P. Murphy, and shared insights in our quarterly newsletters.
  • Research Support: Assisted with diverse projects, from college theses to local genealogy and historical inquiries.
  • Engaging Events: Welcomed the community to an Open House showcasing our off-site archives.
  • Preserving Our Space: Undertook essential repairs to The Nettleton House Museum, ensuring its place as a historical gem on Central Street.
  • Preservation Efforts: Continued to collect, preserve, and display historical treasures donated by our community.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Goals for 2025

As we step into a new year, we remain committed to our mission of preserving Newport’s history while finding new ways to share it with you. Here’s what’s on the horizon:

  • Volunteer Engagement: Grow our volunteer base—whether you love skiing, military history, or local sports, there’s a role for you!
  • Enhanced Artifact Management: Upgrade to the latest version of our PastPerfect cataloging software, ensuring seamless retrieval and preservation of donated items.
  • Community Outreach: Expand our educational programs and continue sharing Newport’s history through exhibits, newsletters, and events.
  • Online Accessibility: Introduce online giving options and a digital newsletter subscription to better serve our members.
  • Gift Shop Revival: Bring our books and gift items back to local events, celebrating Newport’s heritage in new ways.

  1. My grandmother lived in Newport during the great Depression and she told myself as a young boy many stories about the town. I’d like to be able to browse online through your collection of historical photos someday, but I realize that’s a tall order.

    1. @New Hampshire Garden Solutions: Thank you for getting in touch. At this time we do not have any of our archives digitized and available on-line. Our museum is typically open on Sundays from 10-2 and by appointment. Please look at our calendar on our website for updated information.
